Orphan. You hated that word. To you, it was the most unfair thing in the world. You were 14 years old and never got adopted. You honestly wanted to run away and just find your own way. You had contemplated this for a long time and felt like you would go through with it tonight. But of course, something held you back. 'Where would I go? What can I do when I get to that place? How will I support myself?' Those exact thoughts were going through your mind right now. You were quickly whisked away from those thoughts when a little girl with green eyes and blonde pigtails tugged on your shirt.
"____, can you play with me?" The little girl asked while clutching a Barbie doll. This little girl was like your own child. Her name was Alice and she was only four years old when the orphanage found her on their doorstep. You smiled at the memory and nodded to Alice.
"Okay sweetie. But what are we gonna do? I don't have a dolly!" You said with mock horror. Alice scampered off as fast as a six year old could to get you a doll. Oh yeah, that thing that held you back? That was Alice and all the other children at the orphanage. You took care of them. You had the help of Mr. Carriedo and Mr. Varages, but they often tended to the much smaller kids. With you being the oldest girl there, many of the kids turned to you as a result. Just as Alice came running back, you saw Emily trip while running over, crying. You went into a motherly mode and ran over to her.
"____, what happened to Emily?" Alice asked, walking up to you and Emily. You just shrugged and held the small girl in your arms. You stood up and carried her to the bathroom. As you passed Mr. Carriedo, he put a hand on your shoulder.
"You don't need to do this chica. Me and Lovi are supposed to take care of you." You smiled and jounced Emily in your arms.
"It's okay. I don't mind. You two are always caught up in all the other kids. Besides, you two are going to need all the help you can get." You teased him and continued to the bathroom. You sat Emily down on the rim of the tub and asked her what was wrong.
"I-I saw people start to pick on Anya! S-So I had to protect my best friend!" Emily rubbed her eyes and sniffled. "I-I love Anya, I don't wanna s-see her cry!" You sighed and kissed her forehead.
"Emily, honey, you can't be the heroine every day." You let a few tears slide down your cheeks as you said the next thing. "We're not machines; we can't take care of everyone or everything at once." Emily wiped your tears and hugged you.
"But, can't I be your heroine? I gotta help somebody!"
"Yes, you can. But just don't get yourself beat up anymore, kay?" Emily nodded just as you heard Mr. Varages call you. You walked out of the bathroom and to the front desk while holding Emily in your arms.
"Bella, you can put her down now."
"But she's so cute."
"____, put her down." Mr. Carriedo said. You nodded and kissed Emily's forehead. Mr. Varages and Mr. Carriedo said that someone was coming later today to see if they could adopt a child. You immediately stood up and ran. You couldn't let Alice get adopted without you. She would never let the same happen to you either. You ran to find Alice and saw her playing with Sakura. You quickly told Sakura to go play with Feliciana and Monica. Alice stood up and bowed to Sakura while giggling.
"____, what's wrong?" Alice asked, tilting her head to one side.
"Alice, a family is coming to see if they can adopt…" You trailed off and saw the tears in Alice's eyes. You both knew that you had been extremely lucky that you got to stay together all this time. But, as you say, all good things must come to an end. Alice started to cry and you tried to comfort her. This went on for a good half hour before she stopped. But by the time the half hour of her crying ended, and you feeding her soft coaxing words in different languages, a knock was heard at the door. You took Alice out of your lap and stood up to get the door. Just as you opened the door, you were tackled to the ground from behind. You fell on top of a young man with blonde hair and green eyes.
"_-____!" Alice wailed, clinging to your legs. "I-I donn w-wanna be all al-lone!" You sighed and rolled of this stranger.
"I'm so sorry sir." You said, facing the man. You got up and offered a hand to him. He gratefully took it and thanked you after you pulled him up. You nodded and turned to Alice, who was a crying mess in the middle of the room.
"Alice, you have to stop! You and ____ have always been together, what makes you think she would leave you now?" You saw Emily hugging Alice and rubbing her back. You walked over and put a hand on Emily's head while squatting down.
"That's enough Emily, go play with Anya." Emily nodded and kissed you on the cheek before running off. "Alice, honey bun, stop. You know I don't like it when you cry." You took her face in your hands and rubbed your nose against hers. "I love you sweetie. Don't worry, even if we don't get adopted together, I promise that I'll find a way to see you still."
"B-But ____. He's here to adopt somebody! He could take you and not me, or he cou-" You silenced Alice with a little kiss on the cheek. You placed her in your lap and started to sing a lullaby from a DreamWorks movie you had seen forever ago.

"Hush now my baby
Be still and don't cry
Sleep as your rocked by the stream
Sleep and remember my last lullaby
I'll be with you when you dream

River, oh river
Flow gently for me
Such precious gift comes your way
Do you know where she can be free?
If you do deliver her there"

All the kids smiled and some even clapped. You never sang in front of anybody but the kids. For you, singing in front of this man was completely embarrassing. You blushed and hid your face in your hair. You felt someone brush your hair to the side and tuck it behind your ear. It was the young man that you fell on. You gave a shy smile and kissed Alice's temple before scooting her out of your lap.
"'Ello love, can you tell me about yourself?" You nodded to this man and saw Alice hug Emily. You smiled and opened your mouth to speak, but was interrupted by a Scottish voice. (It's too hard to wright in a Scottish accent, so I'm just gonna make it all normalness~)
"Artie! Ye left us behind!" A man with bright red hair and sparkling green eyes burst through the door, scaring all the kids and making them run. But Alice stood her ground. You were secretly cheering her on in your head and grinning. But that soon stopped when the man looked at her. "Aye! Who's the cute little lassie?!" The man boomed. Alice's bottom lip started to quiver and tears slid down her cheeks.
"Alice!" You said, running over. She burst into tears as soon as you pulled her into your lap. "Shhh. It's okay sweetie. He's not gonna hurt you. You need to remember that I'll always be here to protect you." You wove your fingers through her pigtails and hummed softly. The redhead and the blonde both stared at you in awe as Alice stopped crying. You stood up while holding Alice and jounced her in your arms. "You've been crying so much today honey. I don't think that's good. Besides, where do all those little tears come from?" You asked, trying to make her laugh. She giggled and smiled.
"I donno. But can you make sure he's not mean?" Alice asked, burying her face into your shoulder. You nodded and walked over to him.
"Hi, I'm ____ ____. This is Alice K. no one knows her actual last name. She just doesn't really like new people, especially guys for some reason." Alice then whispered something into your ear and you nodded. You put her down and stuck out your hand. The redhead smiled and took your hand.
"I'm Allistor Kirkland. That there is my wee brother, Arthur." Allistor let go of your hand and squatted down to Alice's height. "Sorry for scarin ye lass." Alice nodded and walked closer to him. You grinned, knowing what was about to happen. You looked to Arthur and whispered,
"You might wanna see this." As if on cue, Alice wrapped her small arms around his neck and sighed. Allistor hugged Alice's small body and flashed you and Arthur a smile. You walked over and petted Alice's head. "See Alice, not all boys are like your Dad." You then spent the rest of the day getting to know the two of the men.
Arthur was a quiet kind of man. He would much rather drink tea and read than anything else. He believed in mythical creatures, which got you really excited. Arthur also said that Allistor was his older brother. It went Allistor, Ian, Dylan, Arthur, and lastly Peter. They were all English, yet they had different accents. Oh, and about Allistor… You had to send Alice out of the room for him…
"So lassies, what do ye think?" Allistor asked. You and Alice looked at one another and shrugged.
"Whadda ya mean?" You asked.
"Do you two want to be my daughters?" Arthur smiled as he asked this. You and Alice looked at Arthur in disbelief.
"No flippin way! You mean you want to adopt us?!" You asked, jumping up. Arthur just nodded and Alice climbed up into his lap. You 'awww'ed at her actions and kissed her head. You then kissed Allistor and Arthur's foreheads. "I take it that Alice likes that, so I'm in for it."

~next month~

"____! ____! Let's go play in the snow!" Alice jumped up and down on your stomach. You groaned and looked at her.
"Baby, it's too early."
"It's nine…" You jumped up and held Alice close. You promised her you would go and play with her outside at 8:30. You quickly shooed her out of your room and got dressed. By the time you were downstairs, it was nine fifteen. You saw Allistor making some toast, Arthur reading the paper, Ian holding Dylan in a headlock, Dylan trying to pry his neck out of his twin's grip, and Peter waving at you. There was a little part of the family that was missing… You waved back to Peter, who was your age, and kissed them all 'good morning'.
"Hey, Uncle Ian, stop that. You could suffocate him by accident. Uncle Dylan, just kick him where it hurts the next time he does it." You stated blandly. Ian's face paled and he let go of Dylan immediately. Allistor and Arthur laughed at this while Peter had facepalmed. You giggled a little bit and hugged you adoptive father.
"Good morning to you too love. How was waking up this morning?" You glared at him, but stopped when you heard a giggle from behind.
"Fine, but a little pixie wanted to jump on me…" You quickly let go of Arthur and enveloped Alice in a hug. "And look! I caught the pixie!" You picked up Alice and gave her to Arthur. Alice looked up at him innocently.
"Hi daddy. I'm a pixie now." Alice smiled and kissed his nose. "There! Now you're a pixie too!" You just leaned against the wall and smiled. Allistor walked over to you and planted a kiss on top of your head. You leaned into your Uncle and sighed.
"Alrighty baby! How about you get dressed in all your snow stuff and I will too!" You clapped your hands together and pulled her away from Arthur. You put her down in front of the stairs and said, "Be back in a few!" With that, you went into Alice's room and helped her out of her Pj's and into her normal clothes. After you got her dressed in her snow clothes, you carried her downstairs.
"I can walk…" Alice pouted.
"I don't want to risk you falling down the stairs. Remember when I fell down the stairs and twisted my ankle? That hurt. A lot. So I don't want you to hurt yourself." You hugged her and went back upstairs to get changed. When you got changed, you ran down the stairs.

~Timeskip- an hour later~

You were just sitting in the snow when you felt a snowball hit you in the back of the head. You just made a snowball and got up. Turning around, you saw who threw it. It was the strangest 15 year old you had ever heard of, Francis Bonnefoy.  He laughed and threw another snowball. You dodged this one and threw yours at him. You missed and bent down to collect more snow. Using this to his advantage, Francis aimed this one at your face. Which it hit. You stumbled backwards a little.
"'ey! Gil! Let's get 'er, she's down!" Francis shouted. Out of nowhere, an albino looking boy jumped and threw snowballs at you. With the two of them, you knew you couldn't stand a chance. But that didn't mean you weren't going to go down without a fight. You dodged some, caught others, but you mostly got hit. Then, Alfred Jones came and started to throw them at you too. Blow after blow, you continued standing, but you knew that wouldn't last long.
Alfred threw one last snowball at you and you finally fell.
"Dudette, you live with gays. I mean, how could you have not noticed this? They're freaking gay!" You looked up at him and kicked him in the shin. "Ow! What the hell?!" Alfred went to pick up your head so he could slap you, but a gloved hand gripped his wrist. You looked and saw your entire family ready and waiting to make sure he would never mess with you again. Your father had to hold back Uncle Allistor and Ian was holding Alfred's wrist. Dylan helped you up and brushed snow off of you. You swatted him away and sighed.
"So what? Even if they are gay, I love them for who they are. My family is my family." You walked over and took Ian's hand off of Alfred's wrist. "You never judge someone for their sexuality, race, or skin. A person isn't just in a giant pool of their ethnic group. A person is a person, no matter who they are. Who cares if my family is gay?! Not me! I love them and they love me, that's the only thing that matters." You huffed and lead Ian and Dylan away. Once inside, you took off your snow gear and headed to the fireplace. You felt someone put a hand on your shoulder and you turned. It was your Dad and Uncle Allistor.
"Lass, that was amazing. No one has ever stuck up for any of us, except for ourselves." Uncle Allistor said, sitting down with you. "And for that, I have to thank ye. We'll make sure nothing like that happens again." Arthur sat on your other side and gave you a hug.
"Love, Allistor is right. No one even thought about doing what you just did. You're a very brave, kind, sweet, and loving girl. And on top of that, you weren't afraid to yell at that git."  You gave them both hugs and sighed. You turned to watch the flames dance and emit little sparks at some points.
"Uncle Allistor, Papa… Nothing can be perfect." You whispered. "But screw those people who didn't help you guys! You're really nice!" You felt someone hug you from behind.
"Mean words ____." Alice said. You let a giggle make its way past your lips and you smiled.
"I know. I meant for them to be mean." You turned around and saw Alice in a cute little blue dress. "But don't you ever think that I would mean to talk to you like that, okay?" Alice nodded; you smiled again and kissed her on the head.
